Premuda

There is an undersea cave called ‘the Cathedral’ in the waters off Premuda.

The cave is very well lit by natural light thanks to large openings, passages and holes in its ceiling. Beams of light through the latter holes illuminate the interior during the day, therefore giving it the impression of a holy sanctuary like a cathedral, hence the cave’s name.

How the dive goes

Premuda is one of our more distant sites, so the boat trip is longer and carries a surcharge. The dive is built around the undersea cave known as the Cathedral. Large openings, passages and holes in its ceiling let daylight in, and during the day beams of light come through those holes and light the interior. That is where the cave gets its name.

You still carry a lamp. Inside any overhead the light is uneven, and a lamp is what lets you look into the parts the sun does not reach. The maximum depth is 39 metres, and an average dive lasts about 45 minutes.

Who this site suits

You need an Advanced certification, a dive logged within the past three months and an underwater lamp. All three are on the spec card for a reason.

An overhead environment asks for calm buoyancy and a simple plan: you keep off the bottom so the silt stays down, you stay in sight of your buddy and of the way out, and you do not improvise. Divers who like light and structure get the most out of this site.
