The red sea fan (Gorgonia) is a type of coral. Although actually animals, they are described as petrified plants in local lore. This is likely because they resemble shrubs with extended branches, or, even more so, the hair of the Greek mythical creature Medusa (one of the three Gorgon sisters), who had snakes instead of hair on her head and who transformed anyone who beheld her into stone.
